EQ Yin and Kidney

EQ Yin and Kidney formula targets a Yin or Moisture deficiency in the horse, which can manifest in a multitude of ways from dry feces to ulcers, weight loss or poor body condition, and overt ‘hotness’ or anxiety.  Benefits the entire body by providing key sources for moisture acquisition with a mildly cooling effect to reduce heat and inflammation.

Health in the horse is dependent upon balance and most of that balance comes between the Traditional Chinese Medicine concepts of Yin and Yang.  The Yin component to health is a cooling, moisturizing and quiet factor.  The Yang component is more warming, heating, drying, and energetic.  The main house for Yin and Yang storage in the horse’s body is the kidney, based on TCM, and the kidney is easily depleted by overwork, stress, and over training.  Yang is more easily replaced but the Yin component often takes most of the loss.

When the Yin component is compromised and deficient, many problems can arise in the horse including:

• Anxiety
• Ulcers
• Dry feces
• Irritability
• Sore backs
• Weakened tendons
• Weakened hoof tissue
• Loss of body condition
• Fatigue and poor performance

EQ Yin and Kidney formula provides key herbs to benefit and promote the Yin component and Kidney health in the horse:

• Rehmannia glutinosa is a time cherished herb in TCM used to promote kidney and liver Yin in the body, aiding in moisture production, and cooling to the body
• Wild Yam (Dioscorea) is another cherished herb in TCM used to promote Yin in the body, while benefitting tissue repair and aiding digestion via dampness reduction.
• Shatavari root is the Chinese asparagus (Asparagus racemosus) and is used to cool the body and promote Yin while supporting kidney health.
• Sweet Potato is a time proven whole food for promoting Yin and moisture in the body while also being a major source of vital nutrients for overall health.
• Raspberry leaf is used to help astringe or reduce any loss of fluid in the body which may be through excess sweat, urination, or diarrhea.  This helps to conserve the Yin component.
• Gynostemma is used to aid in reducing heat in the body with a cooling effect, which is often a result of the Yin component being depleted and the creation of an excess Yang.  Gynostemma also benefits sugar regulation, insulin production, and inflammation.

Yin tonics, including the herbs listed above, are often ‘heavy’ in nature and can be hard to digest for some horses, especially if there is digestive compromise and weakness.  This is often seen in horses that are overworked and stressed, demonstrating fatigue and potentially loose stools.  In some cases, it is wise to add in either the EQ Gut Blend I for general digestive support or the EQ Gut Blend III for those horses with additional weakness, loss of energy, and fatigue.
